Why Did I Wait So Long to Get Braids!

As a 30 something-year-old adult. Many of you are wondering why I waited so long to get braids or try different hairstyles. So I am going to share my reasons for playing it safe when it comes to my hair. First off, I love my natural hair. I went natural almost 15 years ago and this was the best decision ever. The first time I got a hair relaxer. I was 4 years old. I was so young but it became a part of my hair care routine.

At age 19, I noticed hair thinning and a quarter-size bald spot on the left side of my head. I was so scared but my mother took me to see a dermatologist, who stated that I had traction alopecia which probably was from hair relaxers. The dermatologist then suggested that I stopped using relaxers and harsh chemicals on my scalp. So I decided to go natural and never looked back since.

Since going natural, I typically play it safe with my hair. I wore my hair in twist-outs, low buns, hair puffs, and my infamous curly fro that I create with perm rods. However, I’ve always loved braids but was scared to try them out because my hair never grew back since the traction alopecia diagnosis. I’ve also heard horror stories about braids and how they can do more damage than good so I just decided to not do them.

However this year I have been reading and watching many youtube videos about knotless braids. According to many stylists and hair braiders, knotless braids are the safest and one of the best protective styles to wear due to it’s unique method. After researching for months, I found a hair braider who did them for me. I first tried faux locs first with my hair braider  (Never again because my hair knotted up). However, we decided to do big knotless braids and I am in love with them. They were absolutely painless and surprisingly not heavy at all.

I am so glad I tried something new with my hair. I want to continue researching hairstyles that I can try that will not apply too much pressure on my scalp. I can’t wait to share my new hair journey with you ladies!
